It’d never occurred to Coop that there might be other Amaranthine in Pine Hall. He studied their neighbors, but nope. Totally ordinary.
Another possibility had him excited, though.
Folks from other places arrived twice-weekly for their farmers’ market. Coop had always loved going, in part because nobody cared if he was barefoot. But also because the stall owners never minded talking to a kid.
He’d taken that for granted before, but now he was thinking… Amaranthine liked children.
But how did you ask the not-quite-strangers who sold you sweet corn or potted herbs or clover honey if they weren’t human?
