Among the Trellises

Dad was up the step ladder, Rose on the rung above his, safe in the circle of his arms. “Angle it more,” he coached. “That’s the way. Now… snip.”

Dad had planted that climbing rose in honor of Rose’s first birthday. Every winter since, they’d pore over catalogues that still came for David Cooper, choosing another namesake. The summertime scent of them filled their backyard.

“Bring a vase, Coop?”

“Sure, Dad.” He lingered in earshot, though, curious if Daroo would say anything.

But their wolf only braced the ladder, putting Dad and Rose safe in the circle of his arms.
