Caring about Nuance

As he often did, Daroo lowered himself to crouch before Coop, peering up into his face. Big seemed to be every wolf’s birthright, so even though Coop was fourteen now, this put them nearly eye-to-eye.

He took a pleading posture. “Rose thinks of you as her other dad.”

Daroo’s expression grew thoughtful. “But you don’t?”

“Never did. No offense.” He was wondering now, because wolves cared about nuances. “You’re more Dad’s than mine, but we’re not nothing. So what are we?”

“We’re packmates.”

“Well, yeah. I know that.” Coop fingered the knotted cords at his wrist. “Shouldn’t there be… more?”
