Jacques meandered snow-edged paths, hunting for signs of spring. Hardly the sort of thing he’d done in Uppington, but if Jacques brought Argent a sprig of this or that, the fox would set aside his agenda, just to gaze. Then he’d bring it to show Tsumiko.
Today, Jacques crouched before a patch of snowdrops. White petals. Peridot freckles.
His contemplations were interrupted by Kyrie, who was far too light on his feet.
“Are you busy today?” asked the ten-year-old.
“I certainly find ways to stay busy. But I’d let you overturn my plans.”
“Fairlee says a calf is coming today.”
