Tug of War

When Aunt Holly placed a platter of sizzling sausages and potatoes on the table, Shilah grabbed Coop’s hand. So Coop laced their fingers, taking a good, solid hold before focusing on eating with his left hand.

It helped when Torloo quietly reached across and cut his sausages into bite-sized pieces.

In retaliation, Shilah snagged a fat cardamom bun and set it on the edge of Coop’s plate.

Coop wondered what Daroo would think of all this posturing. Dad would laugh. A wave of homesickness took him by surprise.

Both Torloo and Shilah tensed, radiating concern.

Like good friends do.
