The tray Merl brought didn’t hold nearly enough food.
“Is this bait or breakfast, Kindred?” Shilah asked bitterly.
“Peace, friend. My only part is to check you from top to tail. But yes, you will enjoy a fuller meal with our security team.”
“I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“You’re safe. The boy’s safe,” said Salali, who leaned against the way. “But your being here means that Wardenclave could be safer. Teach me your trick.”
“That’s all?”
Salali winked.
Shilah slowly nodded, then tried to hide behind Coop.
A scowling wolf shouldered inside. “Torloo?”
On Coop’s other side, Torloo exclaimed, “Roo-nii!”
