Coop rested his chin on top of Shilah’s head, thinking hard. “Daroo asked you to follow me?”
“No. He never would.” The coyote grumbled, “He never asks for anything. That’s why I had to sneak out.”
“Sneaked out of where?”
The older boy clammed up.
Coop pet hair that needed washing. “You don’t want to say?”
A shrug.
A snuffle.
A sigh.
“Clearsong Sanctuary,” Shilah mumbled. “Daroo has always, always been protecting us. That’s why he can’t go anywhere. That’s why I came in his place.”
Setting aside all the questions that raised, Coop said, “You must really love Daroo.”
