Torloo helped prop Coop on pillows, a limp coyote draped across his chest. “So he can hear your heartbeat.”

“Listen good, then.” Pushing hair from a face pinched by worries, Coop added, “I’m right here, like I promised.”

“Keep talking. It will calm him.”

Coop dragged fingers through damp tangles, scratching at the coyote’s scalp. “Do you think he understands wolvish?”

Mutt said, “About as well as wolves understand the coyote dialect.”

Torloo nodded. “We understand it, but we do not speak it.”

So Coop got down to basics, crooning his name… and wishing he had one for this guy.
