As they gained speed, Coop had to wonder if Mutt was trying to spook him or shake him. It felt like a test, but it was one Coop had been studying for ever since Daroo joined his family.

He howled for joy.

Mutt slowed to a stop in a meadow and turned an eye on Coop.

He leaned way over to make it easier to be seen. “That was awesome! You’re awesome!”

Softly, Mutt imitated Coop’s howl. Instead of exultant, it came out as a wistful croon. But he had it right.

“Yeah,” said Coop. “That’s my name in wolvish.”
