Gabe’s posture shifted like a wolf’s would. “Hello, Torloo. It has been a while.”
Coop checked, “You’ve met?”
“Oh, yes. We played together as children. But that was a long time ago.”
“Wow. You’ve been friends all your lives?”
Gabe said, “Mine, certainly.”
That was boggling, but not in a bad way. “And now Torloo can be friends with your son? Guess you’re pretty lucky, huh, Mikoto?”
The little boy shyly asked, “Are we friends?”
Torloo’s expression went four ways at once—sad and soft and old and kind. But he knelt before Mikoto and opened his arms, promising, “Friends.”
