Could
Coop stared into the back yard without really seeing it. After a while, Dad came to sit beside him, passing along a bottle of root beer.
It tasted good. Like home. Coop asked, “What do you think I should do?”
“Wrong question.”
“So it’s up to me?”
“Not entirely, no. What I mean is… this isn’t about shoulds. It’s more of a could.”
“I could go with them.”
“Yes, you could.”
“But I’d have to leave.”
“Don’t worry so much about that part. Rose and Daroo and I, we won’t be far behind. And we’ll definitely bring you home again.”
