Daroo had used wolf knots to teach eight-year-old Coop about pack. So for him, knots would always mean patience, trust, and belonging.

So when Ninook-dex Elderbough added a new necklace to Torloo’s collection, then tied a matching one into place for Coop, he knew it was a big deal way before Torloo burst into tears.

Torloo’s dad said, “Her blood forged a bond. She asked for one more chance to guard it.”

A wolf’s fang, large and heavy, hung from a braided cord.

It looked really cool. But knowing where it came from?

Coop clasped Lass’s final gift. Honored. Shook.
