“Coop, I need you to get back to Rose. Keep her at the den.” Dad was calm and steady despite the blood on his hands. “She shouldn’t have to see this.”

He didn’t want to leave, but Coop was Rose’s one and only big brother. He answered, “On my way.”

But first, there was something he’d always wanted to try.

Adjusting his posture, Coop added a subtle gesture that probably would’ve been a whole lot better if he had a tail.

Didn’t matter though.

Because the other boy blinked, stirred, and gravely answered in kind—I’m glad our paths crossed.
