Quiet Night In

Daroo’s den in the woods wasn’t the hole-in-the-dirt variety. Nope. The Clearsong pack’s cave was high and dry, carved into ridge-rock. Empty now, it had become the Cooper family’s private getaway.

Coop lay on his belly, chin propped on folded arms, nose close enough to the out-of-doors that the odd droplet sprinkled it.

Rose sat beside him, fiddling with Grandad’s old portable radio, tuning into the baseball game.

Behind them, Daroo and Dad lounged in front of a hearth, sipping from brown bottles and idly tossing pinecones into a crackling fire.

Coop liked this part of home.
