Chumani introduced Coop to a bunch more folks.
“They’re all Amaranthine?” he whispered, after two apron-clad farmers sent them off with a carton of blackberries to share.
“Of course not. Why would you assume that?”
“Because… you’re Amaranthine.”
She huffily declared, “Species isn’t my first consideration when making friends.”
Coop decided it was the same for him. “So why’d you chose me for a friend?”
“Friends, are we?”
“For sure!”
“Mmm… because you looked at a crusty old woman like she was the most beautiful thing you ever saw.” Tweaking his nose, Chumani added, “And freckles. I’ve always adored freckles.”
