Chumani led unerringly toward the pink trailer and the mouthwatering smell of hot doughnuts.
Dad turned from the pick-up window and just sort of froze.
Coop wasn’t sure how to proceed. “I… uhh. I made a friend.”
“So that’s why you wanted two bags.” Dad offering doughnuts to both of them. “We’re the Coopers. Are you…?”
“Local.” She pointed. “Our stall’s the one with the medicine wheel.”
Daroo spoke up—part warning, part weary. “Chumani…?”
She smiled sweetly. “Just being hospitable. Can I show him around?”
Coop took a pleading posture.
Chumani rolled her eyes and promised, “He’ll be fine.”
