“Why them?” Which wasn’t really the right question. Shoving the words past the tightness in his throat, he asked, “Why not me?”
Sesshoumaru grunted. Which was kind of hard to interpret.
Inuyasha muttered, “Guess it doesn’t matter. You’re stuck with me either way.”
Weight slid from his back, leaving him unencumbered. Alone.
Sesshoumaru faced him, strong enough on his own. “Inuyasha. You were not excluded.”
“I can count to four.”
“You are forgetting, little brother.” Not an insult. More like a claim. “The Shikon-no-Tama always required a protector.”
