Gingko represented too many uncomfortable truths, so Jacques labeled him Tsumiko’s ‘beastie bestie’ and pretended the gardener didn’t exist.
“Hey, you … Smith.”
“Smythe.”
The half-fox, who cradled a drooling baby, seemed amused. “You really want me to call you Smythe? Dad’s only doing that to annoy you.”
He drew himself up. “It’s my name.”
“I thought your name was Zzhahk,” he said, giving the ‘j’ a playful buzz.
“Are you mocking me?”
“Depends.” Fox ears quivered. “Are you mocking Dad in that get-up?”
“Wait.” Jacques blinked. “You speak English?”
Gingko snorted. “Surprise. Guess you can call me beastie bestie-sensei.”
